Sealant

What is a Dental Sealant?

A dental sealant is a thin, protective coating made of plastic or resin that is applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars and premolars). It seals the deep grooves and pits that are hard to clean and where cavities often start.

Why Dental Sealants are Excellent for Adults.jpg

Why are Sealants Used?

  • Prevents tooth decay (especially in children and teens)

  • Protects hard-to-reach areas of molars from plaque and food

  • Lasts several years, offering long-term protection

  • Reduces risk of cavities by up to 80%

Ideal for:

  • Children (once permanent molars erupt: ages 6–12)

  • Teens

  • Some adults at high risk of cavities

How is a Sealant Applied?

Quick, painless, and non-invasive:

  1. Cleaning: Tooth surface is cleaned and dried.

  2. Etching: A mild acidic gel is applied to roughen the surface.

  3. Rinsing & Drying: The gel is rinsed off, tooth is dried again.

  4. Application: The sealant is painted on as a liquid.

  5. Curing: A blue light hardens the sealant in seconds.

No drilling, no numbing needed.

How Often Are Visits Needed?

  • Applied once when molars erupt (age 6 and again around age 12)

  • Check every 6 months during regular dental checkups

  • May need reapplication every 2–5 years, depending on wear

Dentists will monitor sealants and reapply if they chip, wear down, or fall off.
