Disimpaction
What is Tooth Disimpaction?
Tooth disimpaction is a surgical procedure to remove a tooth that is impacted, meaning it is stuck in the jawbone or gums and unable to erupt properly—most often referring to impacted wisdom teeth.
It typically involves:
-
Cutting through gum and possibly bone
-
Removing the tooth
-
Stitches to close the surgical site

Why is Tooth Disimpaction Needed?
Impacted teeth—especially wisdom teeth—can cause:
-
Pain or swelling
-
Gum infection (pericoronitis)
-
Damage to adjacent teeth
-
Cysts or tumors
-
Crowding or bite issues
Disimpaction is necessary when:
-
The tooth is fully or partially trapped under gum/bone
-
The position prevents normal eruption
-
Symptoms are present or likely to occur
When is Tooth Disimpaction Done?
Tooth disimpaction is usually done when:
-
The tooth is impacted and causing pain, swelling, or infection
-
X-rays show it’s pushing on other teeth or bones
-
Orthodontic treatment requires space
-
There’s a risk of future complications
It’s often performed in late teens to early 20s, before roots fully develop and bone hardens, making removal easier.
